"Fortunately, many things told to you in your youth have failed to holf any truth whatsoever. For instance, if you pull a face and a brisk north-easterly suddenly changes direction, your contorted mug doesn't actually freeze in its position, or if you eat the crusts off sandwiches, you won't necessarily be blessed with a hairdo like Brian May. And this Hollywood beauty, Majandra Delfino, is relieved that the playground rhyming couplet, "liar, liar, pants on fire" doesn't actually mean that when you tell a massive porkie your underwear turns into a roaring inferno - otherwise she'd be suffering third-degree burns.
"I lied about my age to get on Roswell," says the 19-year-old who plays the sarcastic Maria DeLuca on the sci-fi show. "I had just done a movie where I had been treated as an adult - there is this legal thing that if you're six months away from your 18th birthday and it's in the summer, you can work as an adult or something. I assumed that it also applied to a TV show, so I said I was 18 when the director asked. I got called back and the day I was supposed to go in and test, they found out I was 17, because I asked for a studio tutor in my contract."
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Majandra's family moved to Florida when she was three, and at the age of 11 started in showbiz when she joined an all-singing girl group China Doll, along with her best friend Samantha Gibb - daughter of legendary Bee Gee, Maurice Gibb. But after a few years belting out pop music she decided that acting was her thing and in 1997 landed the top role of cult US TV actor Tony Danza's daughter in The Tony Danza Show.
But that was not before a bizarre run in with another major Hollywood superstar. "I went to audtion for Mars Attacks! and I was sitting in the waiting room," says Majandra. "An old man came up to me and started hitting on me, saying he wanted to take me out. So I asked him where he'd take me and he said, "How about the Eiffel Tower?" I asked him his name, and it was Warren Beatty!" (KR)
